The Calm One Has Nowhere to Put It

He got the call at ten past six and he was in the car by twelve past and he was calm the entire way.

He is always calm. It is the thing about him. When his brother's marriage came apart he was the one both of them called, separately, and he never once told either of them what the other had said. When his mother went into hospital the second time he drove four hours and dealt with the paperwork and made everybody eat something. When a friend lost a child he sat in a kitchen for six hours and did not fill any of the silences.

He is forty-seven. And what he noticed, in a corridor tonight, sitting on a plastic chair at half past eleven with a paper cup, is that he has no idea where his own goes.

Not where it goes eventually. Where it goes at all. It arrives, obviously. He is not made of something different. And then there is no next step, because he has been the destination for other people's for twenty-five years and has never once been anybody else's.

He has never resented that. That is worth saying because people assume resentment and it is not there. What is there is simpler and stranger: a man with a genuine capacity and no outlet, sitting on a plastic chair, aware for the first time that the second thing has been true for a long time.

Anybody who is the calm one knows this. And I want to say at the start: nobody here is going to be told he is repressing something. That is a lazy diagnosis. He is not stuffing anything down. He is doing something real for people and has simply never been on the receiving end of it.

A peace that stands guard

Let me put down a line and look at the verb, because it is a military one and the whole thing turns on it.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.Philippians 4:7

Keep, in that verse, is a garrison word. It means to stand watch over a thing, the way soldiers are posted at a gate. Paul is not describing a pleasant internal weather system. He is describing something posted.

And notice who it belongs to: the peace of God. Not the peace a person has generated by being sensible, and not the calm this man has been handing out at bedsides for twenty-five years, which is a real thing and a good thing and is not the same thing.

You are guarded by a peace that belongs to God rather than by the calm you supply to other people. That is not a soft word for a man on a plastic chair. It is what is written in Philippians 4, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and puts it into a corridor at half past eleven. The calm he gives is a service. The peace that guards is God's and it is posted.

And notice the phrase in the middle: which passeth all understanding. That is often read as meaning it is mysteriously wonderful. It also means, plainly, that it does not depend on a person understanding the situation, which for a man who deals in explanations and logistics is exactly the point.

You have a guard posted that does not require you to have worked anything out. Philippians 4:7 is the text this sits on, and it is the Spirit of God who makes an old letter land in a man with a paper cup at midnight.

Nobody is going to be told he is repressing

Now the part this category exists for.

He is not bottling anything. I want that dealt with because the accusation is common, it sounds insightful, and in a man like this it is usually wrong and always unhelpful. He is not holding a lid on. He genuinely does not have a place, and having no place is a different condition from refusing to use one.

And nobody gets to say his ache is smaller because he is the one who copes. He is the one who copes. That is precisely the arrangement that leaves nowhere for his own, and being good at something does not reduce what it costs.

I also want to say what the missing thing actually is, because I think naming it does more than sympathy. He does not need somebody to be calm at him. He has enough calm. What he has never had is somewhere to put a thing down and have it stay put down.

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.1 Peter 5:7

Casting is a throwing word. It is not sharing and it is not processing. It is putting a thing somewhere else and letting it be there.

You were given somewhere to throw it rather than somebody to discuss it with. 1 Peter 5:7 is where the word puts it, and it is His Spirit who lets a self-sufficient man have a destination rather than a conversation.

You are guarded right now, in this corridor, at the end of a day you carried for other people. It is written that the peace of God garrisons the heart and mind through Christ Jesus, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true in a man who has been the destination for twenty-five years.

If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor plainly that you are the one everybody calls and that you have nowhere to put it. That sentence is enough to start with and it does not require you to have a crisis of your own first, and being guarded by God has never been a reason to skip a real person in the room.
