Steady Was a Skill Before It Was a Gift

This message is for inner steadiness for a woman who learned to look composed as a survival skill at fourteen and cannot tell any more where the skill ends

She was fourteen when she worked it out and she remembers the week, which is not the same as remembering the reason.

What she worked out was that a certain face made things go better. Not a fake face. A steady one. She discovered that if her own weather did not show, other people's weather stayed smaller, and that a room where nobody could tell what she was feeling was a room where less happened.

It was a good piece of engineering for a fourteen-year-old and it worked and she has used it every day since.

She is forty-one. And what she cannot do now, and has not been able to do for a long time, is find the line. Where does the skill end and where does she start. When she is genuinely at peace and when she is doing the thing, they are indistinguishable from the inside, which is the part that unsettles her, because a person ought to be able to tell.

She has said none of this to anybody and she does not particularly intend to. What she would say, if pushed, is that it is not a problem, it is just something she has noticed, and both halves of that sentence are how a person talks about something that has been running unexamined for twenty-seven years.

Anybody whose composure started as a survival skill knows this. And I want to say at the start: nobody in this article is going to be told she is fake, and nobody is going to be told that a fourteen-year-old was wrong to build it. She was right. It worked. That is exactly why it is still here.

Not as the world gives

Let me put down a line and pay attention to the distinction He goes out of His way to draw.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.John 14:27

He could have stopped after the first half. He does not. He adds a clause specifically to say that the kind He hands over is a different kind from the one that is generally available, which means the difference mattered enough to name.

The world's version is largely the absence of trouble, or the management of the appearance of trouble. That is not an insult to it. It is genuinely useful and a fourteen-year-old who invents a version of it has done something clever.

What He offers is not described as an absence. It is described as a gift, given, His own, handed over from a person to a person.

You are given a peace that comes from a Person rather than one you engineered at fourteen. That is not a soft word for a woman with a wooden spoon in her hand. It is what is written in John 14, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and puts it into a loud kitchen in the early evening. The skill is real and it works. The peace He gives is a different substance entirely.

And notice when He says it. He is hours from the cross, talking to men who are about to fall apart, and He is not describing calm conditions. He is handing something over in the worst evening of their lives.

You have something being handed to you rather than something you have to hold together, and He said so on the hardest night there has ever been. John 14:27 is where that is written, and it is the Spirit of God who makes an old promise land in a woman who cannot find the line in herself.

The fourteen-year-old was not wrong

Now the part this category exists for.

Nobody is going to be told to dismantle it. She built something that worked, in a situation she did not choose, at an age where most people are not building anything, and it has served her and other people for twenty-seven years. That is not a pathology and treating it as one would insult a girl who did well.

And nobody is going to tell her that her life looks fine so this is a small thing. Her life does look fine. She is competent and liked and the kitchen she is standing in is full of people who are glad she is there. None of that touches the specific unease of not being able to find your own edges, and it is not a small thing at all.

What I want to offer instead of dismantling is an addition. She does not need to lose the skill. She needs something underneath it that is not the skill, so that on the days the skill is running she is not the only thing holding the floor.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee.Isaiah 26:3

Kept, in that verse, by somebody else. Not maintained.

You were offered a kept peace rather than a maintained one, and the keeping belongs to God. Isaiah 26:3 is the written word for it, and it is His Spirit who puts something underneath a capacity rather than taking the capacity away.

You are held right now, in this kitchen, with the skill running exactly as it has since you were fourteen. It is written that He gives His peace and not as the world gives, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true in a woman who cannot tell the difference from the inside.

If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor plainly that you have not been able to find your own edges since you were fourteen. That is a describable thing and there are people trained in exactly it, and being given peace by Christ has never been a reason to go without one.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not a demolition of anything. It is a transfer of weight, and it happens in a warm kitchen with six people talking.

For twenty-seven years the arrangement has been: I am steady because I am good at looking steady, and I cannot tell where one ends. This evening the order reverses. The peace He gives is His own, handed over, of a different kind, and the skill goes back to being what it always was: a good piece of work by a fourteen-year-old that has served a lot of people.

You are established this evening, in this kitchen, with the skill running exactly as normal. I am not speaking my own comfort over anybody. John 14:27 distinguishes the peace He gives from the kind the world hands out, and it is the Spirit who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.

And the practical part is one sentence and it does not require the skill to stop. Say the gap out loud, once, somewhere nobody can hear: I learned this at fourteen and I cannot find where it ends. Nothing has to change afterward and no edges have to be located tonight. You have permission to name it without dismantling anything that is holding. The written word says He keeps in perfect peace the one whose mind stays on Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a woman who did something clever at fourteen and never stopped.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, feet flat on the floor. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to this evening is nobody from when you were fourteen, because they are not the subject of this and you have no authority over any of them. What you speak to is the requirement to be the only thing holding the floor. Whatever He does with the skill is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. Which peace was given is not up for negotiation.

  1. Skill I learned at fourteen, you are a survival, and you are not the peace He gives. John 14:27 says my peace I give unto you, not as the world gives, and He drew that line Himself on purpose.
  2. Requirement to hold the floor alone, you have run twenty-seven years of my rooms, and today you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that He keeps in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him.
  3. Lord, You are the One who hands over a peace that is Your own and not the world's, as it is written, and I thank You that You said it hours from the cross to men who were about to fall apart. There is one true sentence to say out loud where nobody can hear, and saying it is what I am doing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
