He has tried to write it down four times and every one of them was wrong before the end of the first line.
It is not sadness, because he checked, and sadness has a shape and he knows what that shape is. It is not anxiety, because he has had that too and it moves differently. It is not doubt, which is the one people assume, and he has been asked about it twice and both times he could tell they were relieved to have a category.
There is no category. There is a thing in him, present for about three years, that has no name and no edges and no story attached, and he has never once been able to say a single accurate sentence about it.
He is fifty-two. He goes to church and it is not fake. He prays, or he tries to, and the trying is where the whole thing sits, because prayer as he understands it is telling God about something, and he cannot tell God about a thing he cannot describe.
So he mostly does not. And then that feels like distance, and then the distance goes into the pile of things he cannot name, and the pile gets slightly bigger every month.
Anybody who has had a thing with no name knows how alone that is. And I want to say at the start that nobody here is going to be handed a diagnosis, and nobody is going to be told that a life this in order means it must be minor. It is not minor. A thing you cannot name is heavier than a thing you can, because there is nowhere to put it and nobody to hand it to.
Groanings that cannot be uttered
Let me put down a line that exists in Scripture specifically for people in this position.
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.Romans 8:26
Read the middle of it. We know not what we should pray for as we ought. Paul puts that in as a stated fact about believers generally, not as a confession of failure, and then he says what happens next.
And what happens next is not that the person eventually finds the words. It is that the Spirit intercedes, and the intercession itself is described as groanings which cannot be uttered, which means it is not made of words either.
You are prayed for by the Spirit in something that is not words, and the not knowing was assumed rather than penalized. That is not a soft word for a man who has failed to write it down four times. It is what is written in Romans 8, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and puts it into a stone room on a gray afternoon. The thing has no name. The intercession does not need one.
And notice the first phrase, which is often skipped: helpeth our infirmities. The word for help there is an unusual one, a compound, with the sense of taking hold of a thing alongside somebody at the other end of it. It is a lifting-together word.
You have Somebody taking hold of the other end of a thing you cannot lift or describe. Romans 8:26 is the text this sits on, and it is the Spirit of God who makes an old letter land in a man who has stopped trying to pray about it.
Nothing here is going to name it for him
Now the part this category exists for.
I do not know what it is and I am not going to invent something. Not a wound, not a season, not a spiritual dryness with a fashionable label. Handing a man a name that does not fit is worse than leaving him without one, because he will spend a year trying to make himself the right shape for it.
And nobody gets to say that his life being in order makes it minor. His life is in order. He is fifty-two with work and a family and a church and no crisis anywhere in the frame, and that is exactly the condition under which a nameless thing is least likely to be asked about and most likely to be dismissed by the person carrying it.
What I will say is that not being able to name a thing is not a failure of self-knowledge and it is not a spiritual defect. Romans 8 assumes it.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.Psalm 34:18
There is no requirement in that verse that a person be able to say what broke.
You were never asked to describe it in order to be near, and the nearness has no clause attached. Psalm 34:18 is where the word puts it, and it is His Spirit who lets a man be close without a working vocabulary for what is going on.
You are held right now, in this room, with three years of something that has never had a name. It is written that the Spirit intercedes with groanings that cannot be uttered, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true in a man who has stopped writing it down.
If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and go to a doctor or a counselor and say exactly what you have here: something has been going on for three years and I cannot name it. That sentence is enough to walk in with, and being interceded for by the Spirit has never been a reason to go without a real person in the room.
Here is where it turns, and it is not a name for the thing. It is the weight moving, and it happens on a bench in a stone room.
For three years the arrangement has been: I cannot bring it until I can describe it. This afternoon the order reverses. The Spirit intercedes in something that is not words, and takes hold of the other end of a thing nobody can lift alone, and the thing goes on being exactly what it is: unnamed, three years old, and no smaller for the life around it being in order.
You are established this afternoon, in this room, with no accurate sentence about any of it. None of this is my own comfort spoken over anybody. Romans 8:26 states the not knowing as a fact and puts the intercession in the Spirit, and it is the Spirit who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.
And the practical part is one word long. Not a description. Not a fifth attempt at the sentence. Say the gap out loud, once, in whatever unedited form arrives, and if the only honest word available is this, then that is the prayer and it is complete. You have permission to bring it without describing it, and the describing was never the price of admission. The written word says the Spirit helps our infirmities and takes hold at the other end, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a man who has failed to write it down four times.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, feet flat on the floor. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to this afternoon is not the people who asked you about doubt, because they meant well and you have no authority over what anybody assumes. What you speak to is the requirement to describe it first. Whatever He does with the three years is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. Who does the interceding is not up for negotiation.
- Words I cannot find, you are an absence, and you do not decide whether I am heard. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit makes intercession with groanings that cannot be uttered, and He has been doing that for all three years.
- Requirement to describe it first, you have had my prayers since this started, and today you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that the Lord is near to the broken hearted with no clause about explaining what broke.
- Lord, You are the One who takes hold of the other end of what I cannot lift, as it is written, and I thank You that Paul stated the not knowing as a plain fact and never once as a fault. There is one true unedited word to say out loud in this room, and saying it is what I am doing.
