The timesheet wants to know where she was on Monday, and she cannot tell it.
Top deck of the bus, the window fogged at the corners, her tunic still on under her coat because there was no time to change between the last house and the stop. Thursday. The app is open on her phone and it has a box for every day, and she has filled Wednesday and Tuesday from memory and the memory ran out. Was Monday the man with the stairlift or the woman who wanted the curtains left open. She had two houses on Monday. She had four on Tuesday. She had a double on Wednesday and slept in her clothes. Somewhere between them a whole day has slid off the table and there is no floor for it to have landed on.
The bus swings out along the estuary road and she looks up from the phone because the light has changed. The tide is out. The mud is shining, copper and rose, all the way to the channel, and the wading birds are working the edge of it in a line the way they were working it the last time she looked, and the time before that. She does the sum without meaning to. Since Monday the water has come all the way in and gone all the way out fourteen times. Nobody set an alarm for it. Nobody enforced it. It did not need her to remember it and it did not once miss.
And that is when it turns, because you are the one on the top deck. Your week is the one with no shape. You have a box for every day and by Thursday you cannot tell what went in them, and the thing you feel is not tiredness exactly, it is the fear that a life you cannot account for is a life that did not count. Look at the mud shining. Something has been keeping time this whole week, and it was never you.
The shape was never yours to enforce
I want to say the low thing first, because it is true and you should hear it said. A week that has no shape is not a small thing. It gets into the body. You wake and do not know which house, which town, which version of yourself is required, and the days pass through you rather than you through them, and by the end you are holding a phone that wants an account you cannot give. That is a real weight, and it is not laziness, and it is not a failure of planning. Many of the people reading this did not choose one hour of the shapelessness they live in.
Now hear this over you, in the middle of it. You are held inside a rhythm that God keeps and that you have never once had to enforce. I am not saying my own thought over you. Scripture says He made the moon for appointed times and the sun knows its going down, and it is His Spirit who makes that more than poetry: it is the ground under a Thursday you cannot remember.
He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting.Psalm 104:19
Notice who is doing the knowing in that verse. The sun knows. Not the woman on the bus. Not the man with the timesheet. The sun knows its going down because the One who made it set the going down into it, and it has kept that appointment every evening of your life including the ones you lost. The tide does not keep a diary. The birds on the mud keep no schedule. Everything that keeps time on this earth keeps it because God ordered it, gently, from underneath, and none of it is holding itself up by effort.
The lie underneath the shapeless week is that shape is something you produce. That if you were more disciplined the days would stop sliding. So people are handed systems, and the system becomes one more thing to fail at, and by the second Thursday it has joined the pile. I am not going to hand you a system. I have watched what a burned slope does when you try to force it back into shape and I have watched what it does when you let the seasons raise it. The seasons win. You are living under seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, and God promised in His written word that as long as the earth remains those do not stop. That is Genesis 8:22, and it was said over ground that had just been under water for a year. His Spirit says it over your week.
One thing, kept for you rather than by you
So here is what I have for you, and it is small enough to survive a bad day, because anything bigger would not survive one.
Not a schedule. Not a habit stack. One thing, at the one hour of the day that already keeps itself. When the light goes. Wherever you are, on the bus, in a stranger's kitchen, on a ward, on the estuary path, at the moment the day tips into dusk you stop, and you say one sentence to God, and then you go on. That is the whole of it. You did not make the sun go down. You are only meeting Him at the door He already opens every evening.
You have a fixed point in every day of your life, and it was fixed before you were born. Scripture says your days were all written in His book when as yet there was not one of them (Psalm 139:16), and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a lost Monday back to the God who never lost it. The point is not that you remember the days. The point is that He does.
Do you see the difference between a rhythm and a regime? A regime is a shape you hold up. A rhythm is a shape that holds you. The tide is a rhythm. Nobody has ever been ashamed in front of the tide for missing one. If you sleep through dusk on Friday because the double shift took everything, nothing has failed. The sun still went down. It went down on you kindly. And on Saturday the door opens again at the same hour without one word of reproach, because the One who opens it is not keeping score of who came.
You are not the keeper of your own week, and you were never asked to be. The written word says the steps of a person are established by the Lord, and it says elsewhere that for everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven, and His Spirit is the one who breathes that from a page into a body on a bus. He orders your days. He does it gently. That is not my opinion about God; it is His character, on record, kept.
You have days that are being ordered by God while you cannot find them, and the ordering has not paused once. Psalm 104:19 says He appointed the moon for seasons and the sun knows its going down, and His Spirit is the one who makes an old creation psalm land on a Thursday nobody can account for.
If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the plain truth about the weeks you cannot find. Being established by God has never been a reason to face a hard stretch without a real person in the room.
Something is meant to happen now, and it is not that you make a plan.
Put the phone face down for a moment. The timesheet can wait; it has waited all week. Look at whatever light is in the room or through the window, and let it tell you where the day is. Morning, noon, the long slope of the afternoon, dusk. That light is a rhythm God has kept over you every day of your life, and He kept it this week too, through every hour you cannot find. You have been carried through a week you cannot account for by a God who has the account. That is what the word says of Him, that He numbers and keeps and knows, and it is the Holy Spirit and not the sound of my sentence who makes it land in you as true.
The Lord who taught the sun its going down is the Lord ordering your days. He is doing it now, in the shapeless middle of it, gently, from underneath. There is a shape to this week. It is His. It is not yours to enforce and it never was, and the fear that a life you cannot account for does not count is a fear with no ground under it, because He is the ground.
You are established this evening, in this room, in a week you still cannot describe to anybody. It is written in Psalm 104:19 that the sun knows its going down and the moon was appointed for seasons, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.
Declare this over yourself
Now say it, and say it out loud, on the bus if that is where you are. Christ is in you, and the authority to name what your days are resting on has been handed to you rather than earned by you. Scripture gives the ground and the Holy Spirit carries the words; the force of your voice does not. The mountain here is not the shift pattern and it is not the timesheet. It is the whisper that a week you cannot account for is a week that did not count, and Jesus said that whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt in his heart has what he says. Speaks. So speak to it. However He answers about your shifts, your houses and your Thursdays is His to decide, and the ground you speak from is His character, kept.
- Week with no shape, you are not the measure of my life. Psalm 104:19 says He made the moon for appointed times and taught the sun its going down, and that same God is the One ordering my days, and He orders them gently.
- Suspicion that this life does not count, get out in the name of Jesus. Scripture says my days were written in His book before one of them came, and the Holy Spirit keeps the record I keep losing.
- Lord, You are the shape of this week and I am not enforcing it, as it is written. When the light goes tonight I stop for one breath and hand You the day, and I thank You, because You have never once lost a Thursday.
