She has worked in eleven rooms this year and she could describe the plug socket situation in every one of them.
The laptop opens wherever she is. A table at a sister's house. A borrowed desk in a spare room. Twice, honestly, a bed, which she is not proud of and does not intend to repeat and will probably repeat.
She is thirty-four and the work is genuinely fine. She likes it. This is not an article about a bad job.
The problem is that the day has no walls. There is no commute, which sounds like a gift and is also the removal of the two edges a day used to have. There is no room she leaves. There is no hour at which the thing is over, because the laptop is on the same table where she eats and it is open, and so the day does not end, it thins out and then eventually she goes to bed at some point still in it.
Last week she caught herself answering something at ten past eleven at night and could not have told anybody why she was doing it. Not urgent. Not asked for. Just still in the day, because the day had no end on it.
Anybody working from wherever they are staying knows this. And I want to say at the start that I am not going to hand anybody a system. No shutdown ritual, no method with a name, no rules about screens. A woman with no walls does not need one more structure she can fail at by Wednesday.
Bounds, and times before appointed
Let me put down a line and pay attention to the two things God is described as determining.
And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation.Acts 17:26
Times and bounds. Paul is standing in Athens saying that a person's when and where are things God sets, and he says it to an audience that prided itself on working everything out for itself.
And notice bounds is a limits word. Edges. Paul is describing a God who puts boundaries around where people live as an act of ordering rather than restriction, and he presents it as evidence of care in the sentence right afterward, where he says the point of it was that they might seek Him.
You are living inside times and bounds that God determined, and the drawing of edges has never been left entirely to you. That is not a nice thought handed to a woman answering messages at eleven at night. It is what is written in Acts 17, and it is His Spirit who takes a written line and puts it into a borrowed room in the late afternoon. The laptop has no walls. The bounds are God's.
And it is worth noticing what Paul is not saying. He is not saying everybody has a fixed address. He says it to people scattered over all the face of the earth. Bounds are not the same as a permanent place.
You have bounds that travel with you, and none of them were ever attached to a building. Acts 17:26 is where that is written, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes an old sermon land in a woman on her eleventh room this year.
No shutdown ritual
Now the part this category exists for, and I want to be blunt about it.
I am not going to give her a routine for ending the day. Those exist, there are a great many of them, and every one of them assumes a life with enough regularity to hold a ritual. Hers does not. She moves. The rooms change. A method built for a stable desk will collapse the first week she is somewhere else, and it will leave a small deposit of failure behind it.
So one thing. One, at the same hour, and small enough that it works in a sister's kitchen and in a spare room and in a rented flat with no table.
And here is why one small thing at a fixed hour does more than a ritual: it is not trying to end the day. It is putting a mark in it, and a marked day has an edge whether or not the work stops, and the edge is what she is actually missing.
Let all things be done decently and in order.1 Corinthians 14:40
That is Paul again, about a chaotic gathering, and the word for order is a military one about arrangement rather than tidiness.
You were made for arrangement rather than for a day that thins out, and wanting an edge is not a failure of gratitude for good work. 1 Corinthians 14:40 is the written word for it, and His Spirit is the one who lets a person want a shape without treating the wanting as ingratitude.
You are held right now, in this borrowed room, in a day that has not officially started or ended. It is written that God determined the times before appointed and the bounds of a habitation, and it is the Spirit who makes that true in a woman who has worked in eleven rooms this year.
If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor plainly about the eleven at nights. Work with no edges does real and documented things to a person, and being held by God has never been a reason to sort it out alone in a borrowed room.
This is the turn, and it is not a rule about screens. It is a shift of weight, and it happens in a borrowed room with the sun going down the wall.
For a year the arrangement has been: my days will have shape when I have somewhere permanent to work. This afternoon the order reverses. God determined times and bounds, and the eleven rooms go on being exactly what they are: eleven rooms, with more coming, and none of them about to become an office.
You are established this afternoon, in this room, in a day with no start on it and no end. This is not me putting a kind opinion over anybody. Acts 17:26 puts the times and the bounds in God's determining, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.
And the practical part is one item, portable on purpose. One small thing at the same hour that works in any room in any house. A coat and a corner. A window opened. Ten minutes outside. If it disappears for a week, nothing has failed. You have one portable edge available to you this week, and it is a gift rather than a discipline. The written word says God determined the bounds of their habitation, and it is the Spirit of God who makes that true in a woman who answered something at ten past eleven and could not say why.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, feet flat on the floor. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to this afternoon is not your work and not the people who send the messages, because you have no authority over them. What you speak to is the day that never ends. Whatever He does with the rooms is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. Who determines the bounds is not up for negotiation.
- Day with no closing hour, you are open ground, and you do not decide whether I am held. Acts 17:26 says God determined the times before appointed and the bounds of their habitation, and He did it for people scattered over the whole earth.
- Habit of answering at eleven, you have had my nights all year, and today you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that all things are to be done decently and in order.
- Lord, You are the One who determined the times and the bounds, as it is written, and I thank You that the bounds were never attached to a building and travel with a person. There is one portable edge to keep at the same hour this week, and keeping it is what I am doing.
