The Man Who Was Load Bearing

This message is for to find out what a life is resting on when a man's whole ground turns out to be that he is the one everyone needs, and a week away proves it

It was supposed to be restful. That was the whole point of it, and his wife had planned it for a year, and he had said yes and meant it. Seven days, no signal for most of it, a cabin, water, a stack of books he had been going to read since the spring.

By Wednesday he was in a bad way and could not have told anybody why. He was not worried about work. He checked once from a hilltop and everything was fine, which he reported to his wife in a flat voice she noticed and did not comment on. Everything was fine. That was the trouble. It had all gone on perfectly well without him for four days.

He is forty-three. He is the person everybody calls: at work, in his family, in the small circle of friends who have known each other since they were twenty. His brother rings him about money. His mother rings him about the doctor. Two of the friends ring him when a marriage gets difficult. He has never once resented it, and he wants that on the record, because it is true.

What he found out on the Wednesday, on a rock by a lake with nothing to do, was that he did not know what he was when nobody needed anything. Not lonely. Not bored. Something underneath both of those, a kind of dropping sensation, as if the floor of the whole thing had been the ringing phone.

Anybody who has ever been the reliable one knows the Wednesday. It does not take a cabin. A quiet weekend will do it. I am not going to tell anybody to stop being useful, and I am not going to call this codependency and hand it back to him with a label on it. What I want to talk about is the corner.

The Man Who Was Load Bearing

The corner everything else is squared to

I want to put a line down and then say what a cornerstone actually did, because the metaphor is dead in most people's ears and it was not a decoration.

And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone.Ephesians 2:20

In ancient building, the cornerstone was not the prettiest stone and it was not the biggest. It was the one every other stone in the structure was measured against. You laid it, and then every angle in the building was taken off it, which meant that if the cornerstone was true, the whole thing was true, and if it was off by a degree, the far wall was off by a yard.

Now hold that next to a man who has spent twenty years being the one everything is measured against. That is exactly what he has been doing, and it is exactly the job Paul says has already been filled.

You are built onto a corner that was set before you were born, and the squaring of this building was never yours to do. That is not a soft word for a hard Wednesday. It is what is written in Ephesians 2, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and sets it into a man on a rock by a lake. Being needed is a feeling. The corner is a Person.

And look at the verb: are built. Passive. Somebody else is doing the building, and the people in that sentence are the material rather than the contractor. Paul is writing to a mixed congregation that would have collapsed twice a week if it had depended on one indispensable man, and he tells them what actually holds it together.

You have been fitted into something you are not carrying, and the fitting was done by God rather than by your reliability. Ephesians 2:20 is where that is written, and it is the Spirit of God who makes an old letter land at a table full of people.

Nobody is being told to stop helping

Now the thing this category exists for, and I want it clear before anything else.

He is not in trouble. Being the person everybody calls is not a disease and it is not a sin, and the fact that his brother rings him about money is a good fact about that family. I am not going to hand him a diagnosis for having been dependable. That would be a cruelty dressed as insight, and half the people who love him would lose something real if he took it seriously.

What has happened is narrower and easier to fix than a personality overhaul. Something that was meant to be a gift has quietly become a floor. He gives, and the giving is good, and somewhere along the way the giving became the thing he was standing on, so that a week with nobody asking felt like a floor going out.

For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.1 Corinthians 3:9

Together with. Not instead of. Paul keeps the man's work entirely intact and moves the ownership one line up, which is the only move that helps here.

You were made a fellow worker rather than a load bearing wall, and the difference is the whole of what went wrong on Wednesday. 1 Corinthians 3:9 is the written word for it, and it is His Spirit who moves that from a page into a body that has been carrying a family since it was twenty-three.

You are still standing right now, in a week where nobody needed anything, and the standing is the proof of who has been holding the building. It is written that Christ Himself is the chief cornerstone, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true in a man on the fourth quiet day of his life.

If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the plain truth about the quiet days. Being fitted to the cornerstone has never been a reason for a dependable man to sit alone with something that needs a person in the room.

The breakthrough

Now the turn, and it is not an instruction to stop answering the phone. It is a shift of weight, and it happens on a rock by a lake.

For twenty years the arrangement has been: I am steady because I am needed, and if the calls stop, I do not know what is underneath. Tonight the order reverses. Christ is the cornerstone. The building is squared to Him, and it was squared to Him during every one of those calls, and the calls go back to being what they always should have been: things you are glad to do rather than things that hold you up.

You are established tonight, at this table, with nobody at it needing anything from you. None of this is my own comfort spoken over anybody. Ephesians 2:20 puts the cornerstone on Christ and the building in the passive, and it is the Spirit who takes a written thing and makes it a standing thing in a person.

And here is what changes on Monday. He can say no to one thing without it costing him his footing. He can be at a table and tell a story instead of solving something. He can even be the one who says he is having a hard month, out loud, to one of the friends who has been ringing him for twenty years. You have permission to be one of the people at the table rather than the reason there is a table, and the permission is written into the passage. The written word says we are built upon the foundation with Christ as the corner, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a body that has not been off duty since it was twenty-three.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, feet flat on the floor. Not silently. The authority to speak to what stands in the way is not yours by nature and never was: it is written that you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority is His, delegated, carried in His name, and the Holy Spirit carries the word rather than the volume of your voice. What you speak to tonight is not your brother, your mother or your friends, because they have done nothing but love you and you have no authority over any of them. What you speak to is the floor made of being needed. Whatever He does with the phone calls is His to do, and you leave the outcome with Him. What this building is squared to is not up for negotiation.

  1. Being needed, you are a feeling I have lived in, and you are not the corner this building is squared to. Ephesians 2:20 says Christ Himself is the chief cornerstone, and He was the corner through every one of those phone calls.
  2. Dropping feeling on a quiet Wednesday, you have had twenty years of my footing, and tonight you are evicted in the name of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the one who steadies me, and it is written that we are fellow workers with God and His building, not the wall holding it up.
  3. Lord, You are the chief cornerstone this whole thing is measured against, as it is written, and I thank You that You never once asked me to be the one everything is squared to. There is one sentence to say that has nothing to do with what I do for anybody, and saying it is what I am doing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
