The Bed Number They Gave Her

They give you a number. That is how it works, and there are reasons for it that are not cruel, and it is still the case that a woman with two children was handed three digits on a card and told to keep it with her. Bed 214. The number is how the system finds her, how the meals get counted, how the intake worker looks her up in the morning.

She has been in the hallway for eleven minutes now with a bag in one hand and her seven-year-old holding the other and her four-year-old asleep against her shoulder, and she is doing a thing she has become extremely good at in nine weeks, which is looking completely calm. The seven-year-old watches her face for information. That is what seven-year-olds do. So the face gives none.

This is the second place. The first one had a limit of thirty days and the thirty days ran out and there was a gap of four nights that she does not talk about. She fills out forms in a handwriting that is still neat, which she is proud of and would never say. She says thank you to everybody. She says it a lot.

And the thing underneath all of it, the thing that has been growing since the first intake desk, is a quiet suspicion that she has become a case. Not a woman. A case, in a file, in a system, referred to by a number. Anybody who has been processed by anything knows some version of this, and it does not take a shelter. But it is worse here, because here it is her whole life and both of her children. I am not going to promise anybody that housing is coming through. I do not know. What I know is who she is, and I am going to say it.

Who does the establishing, and who does the guarding

I want to put a short sentence in front of us and then take it apart, because it is one of the most load bearing sentences Paul ever wrote and it goes by fast.

But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.2 Thessalonians 3:3

Three claims and every one of them has the same subject. The Lord is faithful. The Lord establishes. The Lord guards. Not the system. Not the placement. Not the length of the stay. Paul is writing to people under real pressure, and he does not tell them the pressure lifts. He tells them who is doing the two things that actually matter.

And notice the word stablish, which is the older spelling of the word this whole site is built on. It means to set firm, to fix in place. Paul says it about persons, in the middle of a letter to people whose circumstances were nothing like fixed.

You are established, and it is the Lord who does it, not the placement and not the paperwork. That is not a kind thing I am saying in a hard week. It is what is written in 2 Thessalonians 3, and His Spirit is the one who takes a written line and makes it a standing fact in a hallway. Bed 214 is an arrangement. You are not an arrangement.

Now hear me on something and hear me clearly, because this is where a message like this can do harm if it is not said carefully. Being established by God is not a substitute for help. It is not instead of a caseworker, a housing counselor, a doctor, a lawyer, a school liaison. If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question for you or for those children, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a social worker or a doctor the plain truth about the nights. God establishing a person has never once been a reason to face an emergency alone, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling something.

You have the Lord Himself as the one who guards you, and asking a human being for help has never contradicted that. Second Thessalonians 3:3 puts the establishing and the guarding on Him, and it is the Spirit who gives a proud, capable woman permission to say out loud that she needs something.

The number is not the name

Now let me go at the thing under all of it, because I think it is the actual wound and nobody has named it to her.

A number is not an insult. It is administrative. But a person who has been a number long enough begins to answer to it on the inside, and that is the injury, and it is quiet and it is real. It sounds like: I am a case now. I am a situation somebody is managing. I am a line on a report about outcomes.

Scripture is unusually intense about this exact point.

But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.Isaiah 43:1

Called thee by thy name. God, who by any accounting has the largest administrative burden in existence, does not use a number. He uses the name. And He says it to a nation that is at that moment displaced, which is not an accident.

You were called by name and you have never once been processed. It is written in Isaiah 43 that He calls by name and says you are His, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it into a woman standing in a corridor with a bag.

You are His, in the possessive, and the file on the desk does not describe you. The written word says thou art mine, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ancient sentence stronger than a clipboard.

And there is one more, and I want it said over those two children as well. You have a God who sets the solitary in families, and He has never regarded this as a problem to be managed. Psalm 68:6 says He sets the solitary in families and brings out those who are bound, and it is the Spirit of God who keeps a room warm in the middle of a hard year.
